In collaboration with our friends at Garcia Street Books, we welcome you to join us at Bishop’s Lodge for a captivating series featuring prominent local female artists. Together, we will delve into compelling narratives of resilience, identity, survival, and growth. Each session will begin with an introduction by the accomplished author, followed by a reading from their work, and conclude with a Q&A session with the audience.

“Whiskey Tender” by Deborah Jackson Taffa featuring activist Layli Long Soldier

Deborah Jackson Taffa's acclaimed memoir, "Whiskey Tender," explores her journey of identity amidst the backdrop of assimilation and cultural sacrifice. Raised in a mixed tribe native family, Taffa reflects on her upbringing on the California Yuma reservation and Navajo territory in New Mexico. Despite pressure to conform to societal norms and abandon tribal traditions, Taffa grapples with the complexities of her heritage and the impact of assimilation policies. Through poignant reflections on tribal identity, historical injustices, and personal experiences, Taffa sheds light on the overlooked narratives of Native Americans and the sacrifices made in pursuit of acceptance in American society.

“Taken by the Shawnee” by Sallie Bingham

In a rare glimpse into early America, Margaret Erskine's captivity with the Shawnee becomes a transformative experience, challenging societal prejudices and revealing untold stories of survival. Set in 1779, Margaret, a white woman from Virginia, embarks on a westward journey with her infant daughter and family. Despite her lack of exposure to Native Americans, Margaret displays resilience and mental fortitude. Author Sallie Bingham's discovery of Margaret's dictated memoirs prompts a deeper exploration into her story, raising questions about witnessing her infant's murder, surviving her own near-death experience, and the challenges she faced upon her return. ABOUT THE AUTHORS AND SPEAKERS

Deborah Jackson Taffa

  • Deborah Jackson Taffa is an acclaimed author known for her memoir “Whiskey Tender,” praised by ELLE Magazine, The New York Times, and others. With numerous fellowships and grants, including from the NEA and PEN America, Deborah directs the MFA Creative Writing program at the Institute of American Indian Arts. A proud citizen of the Quechan (Yuma) Nation and Laguna Pueblo, Deborah earned her MFA from the University of Iowa and has taught at Webster University and Washington University in Saint Louis. She is also editor-in-chief of River Styx magazine and her work has appeared in publications such as The Rumpus and Salon. Additionally, Deborah is a playwright and performer, having showcased her talents at the Autry Theater’s Short Play Festival in Los Angeles.

Layli Long Soldier

  • Institute of American Indian Arts and an MFA with honors from Bard College. She is the acclaimed author of the chapbook "Chromosomory" (2010) and the celebrated full-length collection "Whereas" (2017), which received the National Books Critics Circle award and was a finalist for the National Book Award. Long Soldier has served as a contributing editor to Drunken Boat and poetry editor at Kore Press, and her participatory installation "Whereas We Respond" was featured on the Pine Ridge Reservation in 2012. Recognized for her contributions to Native arts and culture, she received a National Artist Fellowship from the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation and a Lannan Literary Fellowship for Poetry in 2015, as well as a Whiting Writers Award in 2016. Currently based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Long Soldier continues to advocate for Indigenous rights and artistic expression.

Katie Arnold

  • Katie Arnold, a former managing editor and contributing editor at Outside Magazine, has dedicated 12 years to the publication. She is renowned for creating and launching the widely acclaimed Raising Rippers column, which focuses on nurturing adventurous children and has become one of the most popular blogs on Outside Online. Katie's literary talent has been recognized with prestigious fellowships at the Ucross Foundation and the MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire, where she was honored as the Robert and Stephanie Olmsted Fellow in 2016. Her expertise has earned her appearances on NPR Weekend Edition Sunday, Ultrarunner Podcast, and the Upaya Zen Center Podcast, among others. Additionally, she has served as a guest lecturer at Colorado College's "Writing Wild: Literary Journalism of the Outdoors'' course three times and conducts writing workshops exploring the intersection of movement and creativity. Katie resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with her husband, two young daughters, and their dog Pete.

Sallie Bingham

  • Sallie Bingham, a distinguished author, published her first novel in 1961 and has since produced an extensive body of work, including four collections of short stories and six novels. Her latest book, "The Silver Swan: In Search of Doris Duke," was released by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in April 2020, followed by "Treason: A Sallie Bingham Reader" from Sarabande Books in August 2020. Her writings have appeared in prestigious publications such as The Atlantic Monthly, and her short stories have been anthologized in collections like "Best American Short Stories." Sallie has received fellowships from esteemed institutions like Yaddo and the MacDowell Colony, and has made significant contributions to the literary community as a book editor and director of the National Book Critics Circle. She is also the founder of the Kentucky Foundation for Women and the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture at Duke University. Based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Sallie continues to enrich the literary landscape with her profound insights and storytelling prowess.
