Do Fijian Pirates Found the Cure to Hangovers Centuries Ago

It took a killer hangover to get me on the bilibili. This floating Fijian bamboo raft isn't for the faint of heart but it offered my only deliverance after a night of tasting the island's award-winning rum. Drifting deeper into the forest canopy, I searched for a secret medicinal herb the island's first pirates once used while they were developing sugarcane for rum in the 1800s.

Meet Chef Oliver Scarf

With Oliver Scarf as its new Executive Chef, Nanuku takes a “culinary quantum leap forward,” says General Manager Sascha Hemmann. The New Zealand native brings years of experience training at some of the South Pacific’s best restaurants. Scarf cut his culinary teeth at the iconic Laucala Resort in Taveuni, followed by stints at the Te Waonui Forest Retreat in Franz Josef and at the two-hat “Pescatore” restaurant at the George Hotel in Christchurch. He has a keen interest in raw and dehydrated cuisine, using what’s fresh and in season in Fiji, and looks forward to incorporating both elements in his wellness-focused menus at Nanuku.
