Element 52 Telluride’s High-Altitude Secrets

massage

When Eric Troutner arrived in Telluride, he felt short of breath—and it wasn’t entirely due to the breathtaking landscape. Nestled in the San Juan Mountains, the town sits at 8,750 feet with surrounding peaks soaring as high as 14,000. “There’s almost 30% less oxygen in the air here than at sea level,” he says. “I looked for ways to adjust quickly and found our spa had treatments tailored to ease high-altitude symptoms

Mayflower Clink Glasses to A Weekend of Countryside Life

outdoor seats

The city that never sleeps often sends me seeking elsewhere to find restoration— and a long afternoon spent over peach wine amid the rolling hills at Hopkins Vineyard is usually that place. The haven along the Connecticut Wine Trail, a collection made up of 24 vineyards statewide, is something out of a countryside fairytale. With a charming red barn and endless greenery, the vineyard melts away the memory of city hustle and bustle and soothes you into savoring the sweetness of countryside life.

Chileno Bay Sunrises are better than Sunsets

chileno bay sunset

One of my favourite jobs here is turning guests into morning people. I oversee the arrival experience and I'll know guests are fully immersed in Chileno Bay when they discover that sunrises in Cabo are different. I can't specifically say what makes them so. Maybe it’s the reflections off the white sand of the beaches, the adobe-coloured desert dunes or the deep sea at dawn, reminiscent of a Monet painting; but it’s truly a gift to greet each day this way and see light like that.

Element 52 Conquering a 14,000-Foot Summit

mountains and animals

Locals lovingly call them 14ers—the majestic, rugged mountains rising above 14,000 feet that are heavily concentrated in Colorado, which has the most of any state. The quest to dominate these treacherous summits has captivated many adventurers. “The Telluride area has 14 of the state’s 53 peaks,” Troy Trinh says. “My favorite, Wilson Peak, happens to be one of the toughest. You might recognize its northern face from the Coors Light can.”

Mayflower The Secrets of Steep Rock

hiking

Hiking has always set me at ease, and I look forward to trips to Connecticut for the serenity that comes with being immersed in the surrounding natural splendor. That’s exactly why I keep returning to the trails that wind along the Steep Rock Preserve. Not only does the 998-acres of idyllic hiking trails reveal sweeping viewpoints, lush hillsides, and babbling brooks with every step, but also unveils historic, hidden gems along the way.

Hacienda AltaGracia Sweet Secret

woman cooking in kitchen

Good foundations are the premise of every Costa Rican meal. Our ecology in the Pérez Zeledón region is perfect for sourcing rice, beans, and tortillas and growing sugarcane and coffee, but most people don't know we're experts at transforming the savory empanada into a sweet treat. With corn from Hacienda AltaGracia's farm as the base, we make viscachas - sweet empanadas made with sugar instead of salt. It tastes delicious with picadillo made from chayote squash, a pear-shaped green fruit packed with fiber, antioxidants, and even weight loss properties.

Auberge du Soleil Zeus, Artichokes, and Aphrodisiacs

couple dining

If you visit Auberge Du Soleil when artichokes are in season, plan to dine over a delectable dish that will have you falling in love over dinner— for more than one reason. Thought to be an aphrodisiac by ancient Romans and Greeks, the artichoke’s scandalous reputation has since stuck. It all started with a story from Greek Mythology, in which Zeus fell in love with a gorgeous mortal woman, and turned her into a goddess.
