The Experience
Lift off via helicopter and head south toward the drop-off to Lake Eyasi. Your heart might skip a beat as you skim the ledge plunging 3,000 feet into East Africa's Great Rift Valley. In January, the folding cliffs are especially lush with greenery, and you will likely spot waterfalls sparkling among the emerald foliage (If the folding cliffs are especially lush with greenery and you can only spot the waterfalls in JANUARY, recommend we take this entire sentence out?). As you skim over the vast infinity of the lake, chances are high that thousands of flamingoes will take flight beneath you, reflecting accents of pink on the mirror-like surface of the water. With the helicopter's doors open and the wind in your hair, you will have the chance to capture some incredible images. Next, an en-route stopover lands you at Olduvai Gorge, the cradle of humankind where evidence of Homo Habilis, our ancestors of 1.9 million years ago, was unearthed. Taking off from here, you will begin to see the Gelai and Kitumbeine Mountains, as well as Ol Doinyo Lengai, an active volcano and sacred “mountain of God” to the Maasai. After landing on its top, you can gaze down into its sputtering black lava and take in the harsh extremity of its slopes, as well as views of Lake Natron below, another one of the Rift Valley's great soda lakes.
