Our first ever culinary series, Flavors of Malliouhana, launched on March 11th-13th, 2022 with James Beard Award winning chef, philanthropist, TV personality, and author, JJ Johnson. Over the course of the weekend three distinctive events were hosted by Chef JJ including a Rum and Recess Welcome Bonfire at Turtle Cove with a live fresh catch ceviche demonstration, a Beach Party at Leon’s with yakitori grilling, and a Soulful Southern Brunch at Celeste. Marc Farrell of Ten to One Rum and Robin McBride of the McBride sisters collection were both in attendance as sponsors of the weekend’s events.
On Friday, March 11th, 2022, Chef JJ hosted an elegant beach bonfire welcome party at our secluded beach paradise at Turtle Cove. Guests were escorted from our lobby via Mokes, with handcrafted Ten to Rum cocktails in hand. Once they arrived, the melodic harmonies of steel pan drums were heard echoing through the fresh ocean breeze as they descended upon the beach. Chef JJ led a fresh catch ceviche demonstration with mahi mahi straight from our Caribbean waters, and also served lite bites as guests mingled and took in the magical surroundings. Marc Farell of Ten to One Rum led a founder’s pour, where guests learned about the flavor complexities of his rum, and guests enjoyed a selection of wine from the McBride Sisters collection.
On Saturday March 12th, the festivities continued with an epic toes-in-the-sand beach party at Leon’s on Meads Bay. Chef JJ Johnson was front and center as he live grilled yakitori, as well as an array of delicious bites infusing his signature style with the flavors of our island. Boss and the Horsepower Band was the local entertainment for the evening, and guests enjoyed dancing to the island tunes as the sun began to set on our incredible Meads Bay. A portion of the proceeds from the event benefited The Anguilla Community Foundation which assists with scholarships for the local Anguillan community.
To end the magnificent weekend, Chef JJ hosted a Southern Soulful Brunch at our signature restaurant, Celeste. Menu items included Chef JJ signatures such as fried chicken and sweet potato waffles, smoked trout dip with johnny cakes, local spiced watermelon, and a rum maple syrup. Vere Musiq played an inspired set of beloved musical covers on the terrace, as guests enjoyed a delicious meal gazing across the sapphire seas and sipping on McBride Sister’s Brut Rosé.
Malliouhana placed Anguilla at the forefront of a global culinary discussion upon its opening in 1984, and today continues to entice a new generation of travelers to experience the wonders of the Caribbean food scene.
“Over the Flavors of Malliouhana weekend, I was able to connect and learn with the local culinary team- those moments in the kitchen uniting over our same love language of food was something I will never forget. Teamwork is the foundation to my approach to cooking, and the collaboration with the local community, fisherman, and with the guests was truly incredible to see. Live ceviche on a secluded beach, grilling over Meads Bay while dancing to local entertainment, and bringing my grandmother’s American soul food menu to life was truly a dream come true. Great vibes, incredible music, delicious eats, endless rum cocktails, and new friends and old made for a weekend in paradise that I will cherish forever.”
