Learn The story behind our Anguillian Salt
“Salt is born of the purest parents: the sun and the sea.”
As you depart our sundrenched shores and the endless, sparkling waters of the sapphire sea, we are so honored to share this special piece of our island history with you. Dating back to the early 1600’s, Anguilla has had a long and storied past with the development of the salt industry on our remote island in the Caribbean. To this day, Anguillian salt remains an integral part of our identity, culture, and history. The salt you hold in your hands today derives directly from our ponds, and was even gathered by team members from our own Malliouhana family this past September.
When the Dutch first visited the island in 1624, they quickly uncovered the mass amounts of salt on the land, including 17 salt ponds and more than 240 acres of salt along Road Salt Pond, a mere 5 miles from where Malliouhana now stands. This discovery was the start of the salt industry in Anguilla that spanned over three centuries, and it was reported over 90,000 barrels of salt were exported annually. Following the the Emancipation of Slavery in 1834, salt production began to decline and throughout the next century, salt was mainly exported to nearby islands in the Caribbean.
Unfortunately, in 1985, Anguilla lost its salt markets completely, and the industry that had built the island collapsed. As devastating as this was to our native Anguillians, the spirit and resilience of our island never wavered, and we began to shift towards the development of the tourism industry. Our incredibly unique island culture, unrivaled white-sand beaches, and crystal clear, cerulean waters built the foundation for the tourism industry as we know it today.
As you hold a piece of our storied history in your hands, we want to offer endless gratitude for visiting our piece of paradise. As you prepare your freshest catch in the comfort of your own home, we hope a sprinkle of our salt will immediately transport your senses back to the Caribbean. Just as the salt is born from the sun and the sea, our Malliouhana would not be possible without the unwavering support from our beloved family and friends. We hope your moments in our Caribbean gem created cherished memories that will last a lifetime, and our greatest wish is to welcome you back very soon.
