Do Aspen Snowmass’s Best-Kept Secret

Copper mountain in Aspen Colorado

As a 31+ year local, I’m frequently asked about Aspen Snowmass’s best-kept winter secret. Well, I’m here to let the “snowcat” out of the bag. With over 1,500 acres of ungroomed terrain exclusively for the use of up to 36 people per day, it’s the Aspen Mountain Powder Tours. If you’re an intermediate skier/rider or better, there’s nothing more fun than skiing or boarding “hero snow” all day long with your own private guides and snowcat. Try it—you’ll thank me!

For roughly three days after each snowstorm—a time period that guarantees the freshest powder—Aspen Powder Tours takes small parties of up to 12 to Richmond Ridge for unrivalled backcountry skiing or boarding through open bowls, meadows, and glades on the back of Aspen Mountain. (Only three parties go up a day, so it’s best to reserve early.)

Ride up the Silver Queen Gondola, listen to a safety orientation, then hop on board your snowcat, while enjoying snacks and drinks. Two guides and a driver will accompany your group, selecting terrain based on snow conditions and the group’s experience.

Then the backcountry fun begins! The guides know these slopes like the back of their hand, so your runs will be perfectly matched with ability. You’ll rip down the slopes, blowing cold smoke (dust from the skis) in your wake, and feel absolutely removed from it all for a thrilling connection with nature.

After a morning of fresh, untracked powder, your snowcat will whisk you to a cozy wood-stove heated cabin for a hearty, well-deserved lunch high up in the Elk MountainsStories from Hotel Jerome
