Celebrate 5 Top Spots for Wedding Proposals in Santorini
From the very beginning, I knew I wanted a special destination to propose to my (then) girlfriend. It had to be out of the ordinary, with unforgettable views, and also be a great place to hide away together for a week or two after we got engaged. In short, I wasn’t going to settle for anything less than utterly romantic. Santorini fit the bill perfectly.
It was an elaborately choreographed surprise from the very beginning. I asked my girlfriend to put on a blindfold as soon as we entered our chauffeured car. After we arrived at our destination, I carefully guided her down some steps before arriving at a secret spot overlooking the beautiful Aegean Sea. Romantic candles set in mason jars formed a circle for us to stand in, and lanterns were hung all around. A group of musicians started our favorite song. Then I took off her blindfold, and dropped to my knees. It was perfect: the sun starting its slow descent and casting the sky a brilliant shade of pink, the epic views of the Aegean Sea, and of course, her YES and tears of happiness.
You can’t go wrong with choosing a place to propose in Santorini, but after getting tons of tips, I narrowed it down to these five special spots. Guess where I ended up proposing?
Santoro Restaurant The views from this contemporary restaurant at Grace Hotel have to be seen to be believed. The whitewashed indoor-outdoor space is carved into the cliffs of Imerovigli and overlooks the largest infinity pool on the island and the Aegean Sea.
Skaros Rock Adventurous couples can hike along the narrow trails that hug the caldera’s cliffs to make their way towards one of Santorini’s most iconic landmarks, Skaros Rock. The Aegean Sea surrounds you on three sides for an absolutely incredible setting to pop the question.
Akrotiri Lighthouse After a scenic drive down the coast, you’ll arrive at the Akrotiri Lighthouse, situated on a high cliff at the very southwestern tip of Santorini. The lighthouse itself isn’t open to the public, but the gorgeous view from the whitewashed building couldn’t be more romantic.
Heart Rock in Megalochori Also known as “The Heart of Santorini,” this secluded spot lies just outside the charming whitewashed village of Megalochori. After a short hike down a dirt trail and a few steps, you’ll find a naturally curved heart-shaped rock with picture-perfect views of the Aegean Sea.
Private Yacht What could be more romantic than a private sea excursion by yacht? You can discover hidden hot springs, secret swimming holes and sunbathing outcrops, just the two of you. Cruise until you find a remote setting perfect for a proposal, or pop the question right on the yacht, as the sun starts its slow descent into the horizon.
