Drink Star Chileno Bay Sommelier to Compete in International Wine Competition

Miguel Martinez, Sommelier at Chileno Bay, has some serious wine cred. In April, he won the Jeunes Sommelier Competition held by La Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs Mexico, the national chapter of the world’s oldest international gastronomic society. This week, Miguel Martinez heads to Wiesbaden, Germany to compete for the title of Chaîne’s Best Junior Sommelier of the Year at the International Final, held September 14-17, 2022. Below, some noteworthy highlights on Chileno Bay’s star Sommelier and the competition:

 

Martinez’s background

A wine’s primary grape, age, and growing climate are among just a few of the items Miguel had to decipher to achieve the Certified Level of The Court of Master Sommeliers. In 2019, at the age of 21, Miguel became the youngest person ever in Mexico to earn the honor. 

 

His role at Chileno Bay

As Sommelier, Miguel oversees the wine operation for Chileno Bay under the tutelage of Wine Director, Francisco Rodriguez, and offers on-floor wine assistance and pairing recommendations. “My favorite part of my profession is recommending an unknown wine to a guest based on likes and preferences and watching them smile after tasting it,” he says.

Favorite Mexican wine producers

“Visiting different wine regions is a must to understand a sense of place, and to be able to select a variety of wines that are not only suitable for a big audience, but also offer a taste of Mexican terroir,” explains Miguel. His favorite Mexican wine producers include Villa Montefiori, Mogor-Badan and Bodega Los Cedros.

 

The competition

In 2007, the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs inaugurated the annual “International Jeunes Sommeliers Competition” to offer young Sommeliers the opportunity to present their skills under intense and highly competitive testing conditions. With only 12 Sommeliers left in contention, the group is already highly select. Also in the running for the highly coveted title: Freddie Johnson of the Michelin three-star Fat Duck in Great Britain, and Minjum Kim at the pioneering Jung Sik in South Korea.
