The Experience

Award-winning travel photographer Mark Edward Harris will accompany us throughout this photography workshop providing plenty of opportunities to capture breathtaking photos of the scenery in and around the mountainous landscape. For parts of the trip, you will travel around remote areas of the land and accompany Mark on photo walks to see the untouched mountains, animals, and beautiful scenic views.

May 26

  • Welcome to The Lodge at Blue Sky. Settle in your room.
  • Enjoy an intimate three-course dinner with Mark and a presentation on what to expect from the adventures ahead.

May 27

  • 6:30am - 9am: Meet The Horses - Meet in the lobby early in the morning to take advantage of natural light before heading down to Gracie’s Farm where you'll meet the real heroes of the American West. Mark will lead us in a photo workshop where you’ll learn the best techniques for capturing portraits of both the wranglers and horses. You'll take home a distinctive souvenir of life in the American West.
  • 9am - 11:am: Breakfast in Yuta.
  • 11am - 2pm: Time to enjoy The Lodge at Blue Sky at your leisure, such as a horseback trail ride or a "Back In The Saddle" treatment at Edge Spa. (Pricing for these is additional.)
  • 2pm - 4pm: Midday image processing: Each day, we will gather in our meeting room to present photos from the day’s activities while enjoying light snacks. Mark will guide a critique and provide professional suggesting for optimizing your shots.
  • 4pm - 7pm: Embark on an invigorating hike in the mountains while capturing the dramatic elements along the way. The hike will finish at the Yurt where we'll savor a guided wine tasting while discussing the day's photography lesson.
  • 7pm - 10pm: Following an afternoon wine tasting, we'll transition into a Yurt dinner with a photography session to capture the night sky.

May 28

  • 7am - 9am: Journey on an early morning hike to view and photograph local wildlife such as deer, moose and elk.
  • 9am - 10am: Savor an al fresco breakfast by the banks of Alexander Creek with farm to table ingredients from onsite Gracie's farm.
  • 10am - 1pm: Time at your leisure to enjoy an individual adventure, such as sporting clays, or spa treatment such as "Between Earth and Sky." (Pricing for this is additional.)
  • 1pm - 3pm: Midday food photoshoot with lunch in the Private Dining Room. James Beard Award-Winning Executive Chef, Galen Zamarra, prepares a tasting menu for guests to enjoy after learning the art of food photography composition and optimal lighting conditions.
  • 3pm - 5pm: Midday image processing: Meet in the Wine Room to preset photos from the days adventures while learning valuable feedback and tops from Mark. Process some of your treasured images from the day.
  • 5pm - 9pm: Savor a blink High West Whiskey tasting in Yuta while snacking on savory bar fare and learning about the history of this storied beverage.

  • 7-9am - Breakfast in Yuta before departing from The Lodge at Blue Sky.

Photographer Mark Edward Harris
After graduating from California State University, Los Angeles with a Master of Arts Degree in Pictorial/Documentary History, Harris started his professional photography career doing stills for the Merv Griffin Show and various television and movie companies. When the show ended in 1986 he set off on a four-month trek across the Pacific and throughout Southeast Asia, China and Japan. He since has visited and photographed in 99 countries. His editorial work has appeared in publications including National Geographic, Conde Nast Traveler, Vanity Fair, LIFE, AFAR, Wallpaper, Forbes Life, Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire, W Magazine, and The New York Times. Award-winning travel photographer Mark Edward Harris will guide guests throughout this retreat through the elements of earth, air and water: using the necessary techniques to create memorable travel stories.
